Ireland Is My Home Now
By Norain Zainal Abidin
I arrived in Dublin back in 1998 to complete my studies in Accounting & Finance in Dublin Business School. I worked part time at a Pizza place in Ranelagh to support my studies and living here. I got a job a year after without feeling any discrimination about my identity. Even when I started wearing hijab, my colleagues are very supportive about it. They even prepare a place for me to perform my prayer. Amazing colleagues and friends.
Even now after I moved to different company, I don’t experience any different but better.
I have kind and wonderful neighbours. From Balbriggan to Lucan, they are amazing. Sometimes they knocked on my kitchen window just to see what I was cooking just because everyone can smell curry a mile away!
Even though I was born in Malaysia, Ireland is where my heart is. This is my home with my wonderful husband and four beautiful children.
I cannot remember when I started volunteering with MSOE. I think around 2015, or perhaps 2016. My husband and I started bringing hot food to the soup run in front of GPO every Friday and we haven’t stopped since. We met wonderful, amazing friends.
We hear countless stories. Some made us cry and also make us very grateful. Homeless crisis is very real. These people are real and they really need our help and compassion.
