On Wednesday 28th January, the Muslim Sisters of Éire organised a wonderful cultural outing to the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin.
This enriching experience brought together women from our community to explore one of Ireland’s most treasured collections of manuscripts and sacred texts.
The tour began in the library’s cosy cinema, where we watched a short film highlighting the life of Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, the remarkable collector whose passion for art, culture and spirituality shaped the library’s extraordinary holdings. Over the course of his 90 years, Chester Beatty gathered manuscripts, rare books and artefacts from around the world — many of which are now on display, while countless others remain in the library’s extensive archives. The Chester Beatty Library curates rotating exhibitions each year and even lends items to international institutions, sharing its treasures globally.
After the introduction, we explored the Manuscripts of the Mind exhibition. This thought-provoking display invites visitors to reflect on the power of the written word — from the beauty of script to the profound ways in which texts shape our understanding and response to ideas. The women enjoyed browsing these remarkable pieces and discussing the stories they tell.
On the second floor, we visited the Sacred Texts gallery, which houses ancient Qur’ans and early Islamic manuscripts alongside important writings from other world faiths, including Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. It was a moment of learning, appreciation, and interfaith understanding as we engaged with these diverse spiritual traditions through their written heritage.
Following the tour, the group gathered at the Silk Road Cafe on the ground floor for refreshments and conversation. It was a lovely opportunity to connect, reflect on what we had seen, and share our impressions over food and tea.
We were especially delighted to meet Dr Moya Carey, Curator of the Islamic Collections at Chester Beatty. We’re excited to be partnering with her and the library team to organise future visits and activities — including sessions in the Chester Beatty reading room.
Watch this space for upcoming trips and community events that will continue to enrich our understanding of culture, faith and history!
